Rebecca Efstathiou is an interdisciplinary artist working across painting, sculpture, installation, video, sound, text and photography. Her practice explores states of transition: between presence and absence, one place or another, the visible and the unseen. She is particularly interested in borders, thresholds, memory, movement and the ways in which places — and bodies — retain traces of what has happened within or upon them.

Tracing is central to her process. She traces spaces, forms, movements and gestures, using recording, repetition and mark-making to reveal what remains, disappears or shifts over time.

In a parallel strand of work, the body becomes both subject and recording surface: bruises, pressure marks, cuts, scars and other temporary alterations are photographed as evidence of contact and duration. These works consider the skin as a changing surface on which experience briefly becomes visible.
